was founded by Catherine Eddy. She has been involved in the wine industry for many years and currently works at Burgess Cellars which is where we caught up with her. Catherine’s wine can be tasted at the Wineries of Napa Valley in the Napa Town Center in downtown Napa. In addition serious collectors and enthusiasts may consider making an appointment to taste Ilona at Burgess Cellars located in Deer Park on the way up to Angwin in the northern part of the Napa Valley. Catherine owns 10 acres of vineyards at about 1800 feet on Howell Mountain, planted to Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. Due to the nature of this vineyard’s elevation and location the grapes here receive longer hang time before harvest than of similar varietals grown on the valley floor. This ensures rich concentrated aromas and flavors of the wines.
The name Ilona originated in ancient Greece and is a tribute to the feminine and powerful side her wines. The label is a woman’s image taken from an ancient Greek coin that Catherine found while she was in Paris. This label appropriately describes her wines which are soft, elegant yet well layered with many components of fruit flavors.
We caught up with Catherine at Burgess Cellars where she has worked for many years. We have a bottle of Ilona and will review it by the end of 2009.
