is a new tasting room located on Main Street in the southern part of St. Helena. It is a cooperative that showcases a number of boutique Napa producers who focus on small production Napa wines (the only cooperative public tasting room in St. Helena). Traffic tends to start stacking up on Highway 29 in this part of St. Helena but when traffic is minimal there are nice views from the tasting room window looking across the road at the nearby vineyard. You might also be treated to the blast of horns from the Napa Wine Train which runs on the other side of the road.
St. Helena is finally starting to attract open to the public tasting rooms and Savour is the newest on the scene. The south part of town is becoming a little mini hub for tasting rooms with plans for another to open nearby; Clif Bar’s Velo Vino is also located just north of Savour.
This tasting room is very spacious with a large tasting bar as well as several sit down lounge style seating. In addition a room towards the back of the building is set aside for private tastings.
The focus here is on small lot wines; in Napa this often equates to higher per bottle prices – but not so here. Savour’s philosophy is to have a sizeable range of small production wines along with a wide range of pricing. Savour focuses on the customer’s interests in wine – and while offering set tasting flights, they are also open to customizing the tasting experiences. For example if you are only interested in say Cabernet Sauvignon – you can create a personalized “build-your-own” flight. Wines are also available by the glass.
The city of St. Helena requires all tasting rooms within its city limits to pour only wines from grapes grown within Napa Valley and while some of the vintners here might source grapes from vineyards outside the county, only Napa wines are available for tasting. With extended hours daily until 8pm this also makes for a nice pre-dinner stop after most of the tasting rooms in the valley are already closed.
Since the vintners represented here do not have their own tasting rooms it is not uncommon for the vintners to be on site pouring their own wines. Savour has free WiFi (although not sure why you would need this if you are wine tasting!). Looking to try some tea? When you need a break from wine tasting try SPORTea; this is served here and is a nutritious high energy tea that has a variety of health benefits.
Parking is often at a premium in St. Helena – not so here. There is parking in front, on the side and plenty of parking behind the building.
