is run by several mysterious partners – even their winemaker is noted as “phantom” and his/her identity is not revealed. We caught up with Phantom in Pasadena to try their inaugural Lava Rock release. Yes, sometimes we travel far and wide to taste Napa wines! Their Lava Rock is 100% Napa Valley grown red wine from two vineyards both planted in volcanic soils. The owners have ties to a very large vineyard management company in the valley and as a result have lots of acreage to choose from for their grape sources. No you cannot miss their bright orange, red and black label with the glowing words Lava Rock in the center which is a tribute to the type of soils in their vineyards. Their first vintage is from 2005 which was a very late harvest for most growers in the valley. Long hang time ensured their grapes were rich in color and completely ripe. This wine is a blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon. Their “phantom” winemaker creates a style of wine that is fruit forward and ready to drink at the time of purchase. There is an abundance of fruit aromas on this one including strawberry and wild blackberry. The palate is rich with a complexity of fruit flavors; it is a well balanced wine that is light to medium bodied. Hints of oak and spices complete the finish. Yes this wine is real, not merely a conjured up phantasma by Phantom! Almost 1900 cases were produced. Other plans include making a Pinot Noir and a Sauvignon Blanc.
