We had a fun time at Kelly Fleming’s beautiful winery in Calistoga – thanks to Kelly for great wine (a Rose of Cabernet Sauvignon, a truly balanced Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon blanc from one of Napa’s most formidable vineyards – To Kalon. To Kalon is a vineyard much coveted for its Cabernet Sauvignon but it also has other varietals including just a few rows of Sauvignon blanc. Oenotri Restaurant in Napa prepared a light lunch – tender bibb lettuce salad drizzled with oil, chopped onions and vinegar – and fresh peaches. Thin crust pizza too.
The stone winery adjoins the cave – which is somewhat unusual in that it was drilled entirely through through solid rock – that natural rock was left in place and not covered with shotcrete. Kelly and her two children run the winery – visit: www.kellyflemingwines.com
